Swords in the Big City
Vhas are medium humanoids with simian-like facial features and stand typically between 5’ and 6’ tall, with no discernible difference in height between male and female. They have blue skin and are covered in a very fine blue fur; skin tones vary from very dark to light blue. Vhas have a long flexible tail that can be used to grasp small, light objects. From long exposure to the strong magical energy of their homeland Vhas build up a natural resistance to spells even as they are taught from early childhood to use that magic. All Vhas know some minor magical tricks.
Society: Vhas is a land steeped in magic. Originally the native population were blue-furred monkeys, living in the expansive jungle terrain. Vhasian history begins with a legend of the First Mage. Gifted by the gods, the First Mage learned to speak, to read and write and to understand how to manipulate magic. The First Mage then used his new powers to teach others of his kind these gifts so he could share his insights of the world with others. One of his pupils became jealous of the mage and tried to take all the arcane power for himself. The pupil was defeated but the battle had blasted the landscape. The Great Desert was the result of the duel between Master and Apprentice. The First Mage continued to teach others the gifts of speech and writing but never more did he teach magic. Some of his first students did however try to pass on the tricks they had learned. This is why modern mages can merely cast spells and cannot manipulate raw arcane energy itself.
The gods descended one last time to teach the First Warrior the ways of warfare. They instilled in her the knowledge of all weapons and all the tactics of battle. She was only to use this knowledge in defence of her people. She asked who would attack her people, a peaceful race that lived in harmony with nature. The gods told her to be ready. Soon the First Warrior had to take up arms when an evil race invaded the Vhas from across the sea. She led her people to victory after victory and the invaders were beaten back. To this day the fighting techniques of the Vhas emphasize defence over attack. Legend has it that the First Warrior went to search the world for the First Mage, both ever wandering foreign lands only to meet each other at the end of time.
Modern Vhas have built city-states across the verdant land they call home, the jungle and fertile flood plains that surround the Great Desert. Vhas culture varies greatly from city to city but all share a respect for the animals that share the world with them. Each city has an Academy and the study of magic is a prestigious profession.
Alignment & Religion: The Vhas worship an extensive pantheon, each city state adds its own regional deities. Whilst they live in great cities with the rule of law, Vhas have an innately wild nature. Their traditional teachings steer them toward balance and living in harmony with nature and each other.
Adventurers: Vhas most likely set off from home out of a desire to explore the world, to seek out new knowledge or new magic. Some are inspired by the old legends and will search the world over for the First Mage and the First Warrior.
